A fresh channel forgives nothing. This is what goes in straight after the needle: titanium with no nickel and an internal thread, so nothing sharp passes through the wound.

Why internal threading
On externally threaded jewellery the thread runs along the bar and is dragged through the channel. On internally threaded pieces the thread hides inside the bar and only smooth metal passes through.
Why titanium
Steel 316L contains nickel in the alloy. It is bound and harmless in a healed piercing, but a fresh wound reacts faster. Titanium has none, and weighs about half as much.
Take a longer size
Swelling lasts about two weeks, so go 1–2 mm longer than final: 8–10 mm for lip and brow, 11–12 mm for navel, 12–14 mm for nipples.
What not to do
Do not change the jewellery yourself, do not twist it, and never use alcohol or peroxide — saline only.
Afterwards
Once healed almost nothing is off limits. Healing times: lobe 2 months, lip 2–3, brow 2, cartilage 6–9, navel and nipples six months to a year.
