Flat piercing
The flat is the even area of cartilage between the outer rim of the ear and the antihelix. It is the largest flat zone in the ear: this is where compositions of several piercings in a row are made.

Why a labret
A flat area means a flat back. A labret with a disc at the back lies flush with the skin, does not turn and does not press when you sleep on your side. A ring would look out of place here — there is nothing for it to wrap around.
Tops
The flat is the best place for interchangeable tops: the disc stays in the channel, and the top can be changed. Look at the thread — an internal one is safer for the channel than an external one.
Several piercings
The flat takes two or three piercings side by side. They are better done one after another, not together: simultaneous swelling of several channels heals longer and hurts more.

Which size should I choose?
The typical size for this zone is 1.2 mm thick, 6–8 mm long. Jewellery smaller than needed presses on the channel, bigger — catches on clothes and hair. The exact size of each model is given on its page.
How long does a flat piercing take to heal?
Cartilage heals in 6–12 months. The flat is often done as several piercings in a row — then healing is counted from the last one.
Why is titanium better than steel?
Titanium is about half the weight and contains no nickel. 316L steel is also fit for wearing, but there is nickel in it, and people sensitive to nickel feel it. For a fresh piercing titanium is the safer choice.
Can titanium be worn all the time?
Yes. Titanium does not oxidise in contact with lymph and does not change colour, so it is not taken off at night or in the shower. The jewellery is worth removing only for cleaning — and only from a healed piercing: a fresh channel is not left empty.
