What a tragus piercing is

The tragus is the dense bump of cartilage in front of the ear canal — the flap you close the ear with. The area is narrow and thick at once, so the jewellery has to sit close: anything that protrudes presses against the ear canal and catches on earphones.

The outside of the jewellery is always visible, the inside touches the skin — so it is almost always a flat-disc labret here, not a ring.

Length 6 mm, not 8. This is the main mistake in the tragus: a longer bar wanders in the channel, presses against the ear and catches on earphones. 8 mm is taken only for the first weeks while there is swelling.

Size and material

Material	Titanium — 28 models. Contains no nickel, so it causes no reaction even in a fresh piercing. Lighter than steel — less load on the tissue. The material of first choice. 316L steel — 22 models. Cheaper, corrosion-resistant, suitable for a healed piercing. For the first jewellery titanium is the better choice.
Thickness	1.2 mm — 39 models, 1 mm — 6 models, 0.8 mm — 2 models, 1.6 mm — 1 model. The thickness must match the one the piercing was made with.
Bar length	6 mm — 34 models, 8 mm — 32 models, 10 mm — 23 models, 12 mm — 10 models. A longer bar is needed while the swelling lasts, a shorter one — for a healed piercing.
Ring diameter	8 mm — 24 models, 10 mm — 20 models, 12 mm — 13 models, 6 mm — 8 models. A smaller diameter sits tighter, a bigger one — looser and more visible.
Thread	Internal — 19 models, External — 15 models, Threadless — 14 models. An internal thread is hidden inside the bar — it does not scratch the channel when changing.
Insert	None — 14 models, Cubic zirconia — 14 models, Synthetic opal — 2 models.

FAQ

Does a tragus piercing get in the way of earphones?

In the first weeks — yes, in-ear buds press on the fresh piercing. After healing, with a short labret, there is no problem.

How long does a tragus take to heal?

From 3 to 9 months. It is dense cartilage; it heals longer than the lobe.

Ring or labret?

Labret. A ring in the tragus catches and moves, and there is little room for it.

Which length should I take?

6 mm for a healed piercing, 8 mm while the swelling lasts.
