Why titanium, and why longer
Titanium contains no nickel, so it gives a fresh wound one less thing to react to. And a first piece is deliberately longer than the final one: the area swells in the first weeks, and a short bar would press into swollen tissue.
What to avoid at the start
No dangling charms, no thin decorative chains, nothing with an external thread running through the channel. All of that comes after healing — commonly 6–12 months for a navel.
