How long it lasts
Heals in two to three weeks; usually lasts months to a couple of years before the thin fold gives way.
Why not a straight barbell
A curved bar, horseshoe or ring at 1.2 mm follows the fold instead of cutting across it.
When it is not done
A short or high-set frenulum (ankyloglossia) rules it out.
Care for the first two weeks
Cold soft food and a rinse after every meal. Swelling lasts three to five days — that is why the first barbell is a long one. Skip alcohol, spicy food and hot drinks until it goes down.
