How to choose
An external thread is cut on the bar itself, and the top screws on over it. It is a simpler and cheaper design, typical of steel jewellery; it holds reliably, but on the way in the thread passes through the channel.

FAQ
Can an external thread go into a fresh piercing?
Better not: the thread scratches the channel on the way in. Into a healed piercing — yes, as long as you insert carefully and tighten the top all the way.
Why does the top unscrew?
The thread loosens from movement and rubbing against hair and clothes — normal for any screw-on top. Check every few days: hold the bar and tighten clockwise.
