Synthetic opal is grown in a laboratory and is close to natural opal in structure: the same play of colour when turned. Unlike natural opal it is uniform and does not crack from temperature changes.

Is the opal real?
It is lab-grown opal, not natural. For piercing that is even better: natural opal contains water and can crack, synthetic does not.
How do I wash jewellery with opal?
Warm water, soap and a soft brush, then dry. Opal is softer than cubic zirconia, so abrasive pastes leave matte marks on it, and an ultrasonic bath is not used for it. If the stone is glued in, solvents and alcohol are not suitable either.
