Why a horseshoe
It goes in like a ring but can be rotated up out of sight, which is the reason people choose it for a septum at work. The balls unscrew, so they can be swapped for spikes or cones.
Where they go
Septum, nipple, navel, ear cartilage, eyebrow. Gauge 1.2–1.6 mm, diameter 8–12 mm depending on the area.
Material
Titanium contains no nickel at all, which is why it is the default for a fresh piercing and for skin that reacts. Steel is a reasonable choice once the channel has healed.
Size and material
| Material | 316L steel — 10 models. Cheaper, corrosion-resistant, suitable for a healed piercing. For the first jewellery titanium is the better choice. Titanium — 4 models. Contains no nickel, so it causes no reaction even in a fresh piercing. Lighter than steel — less load on the tissue. The material of first choice. |
|---|---|
| Thickness | 1.2 mm — 10 models, 1 mm — 2 models, 0.8 mm — 1 model, 1.6 mm — 1 model. The thickness must match the one the piercing was made with. |
| Bar length | 8 mm — 10 models, 10 mm — 9 models, 6 mm — 9 models, 12 mm — 3 models. A longer bar is needed while the swelling lasts, a shorter one — for a healed piercing. |
| Ring diameter | 10 mm — 10 models, 12 mm — 10 models, 8 mm — 10 models, 11 mm — 5 models. A smaller diameter sits tighter, a bigger one — looser and more visible. |
| Thread | External — 9 models, Internal — 2 models. An internal thread is hidden inside the bar — it does not scratch the channel when changing. |
FAQ
Which size should I choose?
The typical size for this zone is 1.2–1.6 mm thick, diameter 8–10 mm. Jewellery smaller than needed presses on the channel, bigger — catches on clothes and hair. The exact size of each model is given on its page.
Are a circular barbell and a ring the same thing?
No. A ring is closed all the way round, a circular barbell has a gap. That makes it easier to take off and put on, but it sits a little looser, and the balls have to be checked: they unscrew.
Is a circular barbell suitable for a fresh piercing?
Better not. The threaded balls unscrew by themselves, and because of the gap the jewellery moves freely in the channel — in a fresh piercing that is unwanted movement. For the first months a straight barbell or a labret is worn; a circular barbell goes into a healed piercing, and the balls are checked before bed.
Why is titanium better than steel?
Titanium is about half the weight and contains no nickel. 316L steel is also fit for wearing, but there is nickel in it, and people sensitive to nickel feel it. For a fresh piercing titanium is the safer choice.
