How to choose
A labret is a straight bar with a flat disc on one side and a screw-on top on the other. The disc does not bulge under the skin, so labrets go into ear cartilage, the lip and the nostril — wherever the jewellery lies on the tissue from inside.
Size and material
| Setting | No inserts — 3 models, Glass crystals — 1 model, Cubic zirconia — 1 model. |
|---|---|
| Thickness | 1.2 mm — 7 models, 1 mm — 1 model. The thickness must match the one the piercing was made with. |
| Length / diameter | 8 mm — 6 models, 6 mm — 6 models, 10 mm — 3 models, 12 mm — 3 models. For bars this is the length between the ends; for rings, the inner diameter. |
| Thread | Internal thread — 8 models, External thread — 2 models. An internal thread is hidden in the bar and does not scratch the channel. |
FAQ
Why is a labret more comfortable than a barbell with a ball?
The flat back does not dig into the skin and does not catch. In ear cartilage this is felt at once: a ball on the inside gets in the way of sleeping on that side, the disc of a labret does not.
Can a labret go into a fresh piercing?
Yes, in cartilage and the lip it is the first one put in: the disc lies flat and does not press on the tissue from inside. Only the length matters — take 2–3 mm more than the thickness of the tissue, because swelling lasts the first weeks. When it goes down, the long bar is changed for a shorter one: otherwise it wobbles and rubs the channel.
Which size should I choose?
The typical size for this zone is 1.2 mm thick, 6–10 mm long. Jewellery smaller than needed presses on the channel, bigger — catches on clothes and hair. The exact size of each model is given on its page.
Why is titanium better than steel?
Titanium is about half the weight and contains no nickel. 316L steel is also fit for wearing, but there is nickel in it, and people sensitive to nickel feel it. For a fresh piercing titanium is the safer choice.
